The flag originates from the insurgency movement against the colonial authorities which began on July 20, 1810, during which the rebels wore armbands with yellow and red bands, as these colours were those of the Spanish flag used as the flag for the New Kingdom of Granada.

In October 9, 1952, exactly 142 years after these events, decree 555 of 1952 officially adopted the patriotic armband as the flag of Bogota. The flag of Cundinamarca follows the same pattern, plus a light blue tile which represents the Virgin Mary's cape.

The flag itself is a yellow band above a red one. The yellow denotes the gold from the earth, as well as the virtues of justice, clemency, benevolence, the so-called "mundane qualities" , long life, eternity, power and constancy. The red denotes the virtue of charity, as well as the qualities of bravery, nobility, values, audacity, victory, honour and furor, Colombians call it the blood of their people.

culture
Bogota was originally called "Bacata" (which means planted fields) by the Muiscas. It was the center of their civilization before the Spanish explorers colonized the area, and it sustained a large population. The European settlement was founded in August 6, 1538 by Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada and was named "Santa Fe de Bacata" after his birthplace Santa Fe and the local name. "Bacata" had become the modern "Bogota" by the time it was made the capital of the New Kingdom of Granada, which was then part of the Viceroyalty of Peru, and later of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. The city soon became one of the centers of Spanish colonial power and civilization in South America.

HISTORY: THE BOGOTAZO

Refers to the massive riots that followed the assassination in Bogotá, Colombia of Liberal leader and presidential candidate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán on April 9, 1948 during the government of President Mariano Ospina Pérez. The 10 hours riot left a death toll of 3,000 to 5,000 people and thousands injured, and left much of downtown Bogotá destroyed. The aftershock of Gaitan's murder continued extending through the countryside and triggered a period in the history of Colombia known as La Violencia ("The Violence") that lasted until approximately 1958, and laid the foundations for the civil conflict that continues to this day.

SPORTS: The Red One Advances, The Blue One Stay

The Past Wednesday And Thursday the two mayor teams of Bogotá played, Millonarios against Cortulua, and Santa Fe against Deportivo Cali, The results for the blue team was not good because they lost against the recent team of the first division, the fans of Millonarios are really angry, because not also they lost with the Cortulua, also because they were local. The situation is much different for the red ones, because they won very luckily to the Cali, but they are in the fourth place, upper than Real Cartagena because difference of goals, because Santa Fe have plus three and real Cartagena plus one. We need to wait until the final minute of the final match to be sure of who are the eight teams that advances to the fight for the star.

- I would love every morning, when a student gets up to go to class, understand that there in your college or university that every teacher to teach a class, or a dad when reviewing the work at night, are the scenarios where played the sovereignty of the country, the gap in future.

- I'm not soft, I am a hard clean.

- I like that everything is negotiable, affordable, as if the country be handled through a commercial logic.

- A country more carrots, a country where anything goes, a country where productivity rises too high and allows the ideals of the Constitution because people are not killed and because some people do not take shortcuts. A country where law and culture are closer to where legal obligations are culturally supported: paying taxes, respecting the territorial, respect, obviously, the fundamental rights of others.

- The 'anything goes' is the plague of any society.

- Informémonos before voting, we know the options, read the menu before ordering.

- I think seriously that Colombian society is not enough outrage at crimes against humanity.

- The act of voting is a delicate act, and I see that the campaign is like a mutual approach where people are listening and sniffing, is one thing both ways. The most important thing is that people should rejoice their ability to choose.

- I offer a bed of roses, but one of consolidation. It's like put a foundation stone and concrete, and now play in building more or less the same proportions of brick and sand. Strengthen security with the components of justice and social control, and further strengthen education, for reasons of productivity and competitiveness, deserves a great economic effort.

- In Colombia we have to be is responsible. We must beware of all, regulate, among all, not to do things Chambon. It's civic culture.

- Public resources are sacred resources.

- It is historically unacceptable 'Loch' tax Colombian landowners.

- I do not really like that democracy depends on a lot of silver, and I think people understand it and all candidates should make efforts not to spend the most, but by spending much less. That would make more credible democracy. Democracy is debate and vote after listening.

- I believe in deliberative democracy: the argument goes, an argument is. The interests, the public turn, are moderated or polished.

- I'm not afraid to apply the authority to enforce the law. But the authority must be applied based on pedagogy rather than on force, because that's what makes it legitimate.

The British band Coldplay won, passing through Bogota, contagious optimism with its "Live life to citizens who have forgotten the capital for nearly two hours of concert in the city chaos caused by the transit strike.

The London quartet came to the Colombian capital in full collapse after four days of riots and traffic jams caused by a transport strike, which did not stop thousands of people moved to metropolitan park Simón Bolívar.

The appointment with the rock intimate and increasingly pompous of the group took about fifteen minutes, but enlivened the local band hopes Medellin Altered States and Britain and opening act on the tour, "Viva la vida" in Latin America, Bat for Lashes.

Coldplay, for the first time in Colombia after thirteen years of musical history, pulled together with a slight rain that was dispelled as the band plays the instrumental "Life in Technicolor".

Lead singer Chris Martin showed his usual empathy with the audience with, "Good night parceros (partners)!" who led a series of winks to colloquial speech in Colombia as "Is everything cool back there?" or "Bacano! (good).

The interaction with the audience was not there, but, as has become tradition on its tour of at least 25 countries, Martin danced, jumped and even starred in number of leaks to the main stage disappear only to resurface later in the center of a platform with the rest of the band and new instruments.

He also stressed the yellow balloons rain when the band played the theme "Yellow" from their debut album "Parachutes", one of the most chanted and held by the public along with "Fix You", the third album called "X & Y", which also included a bunch of fireworks behind the stage.

Later, and are the classic "Singing in the rain", the quartet was paraded around the room until you reach another platform closest yet to the public, where he played the song "Shiver".

The story of the night came when Martin sat at the piano and an oversight prevented him to complete the solo of the song "Postcards from far away", so he apologized, tried again and finally came to the next song.

With "Viva la vida" Coldplay reached its highest point gust sublime choirs with the audience, who almost simultaneously raised their cameras and mobile phones to immortalize the moment.

Coldplay closed its nearly two hour concert with an encore of "The Scientist" and "Life in Technicolor II", during which he covered much of the concert hall of the Simón Bolívar park with a blanket of paper butterflies.

Colombia presidential election open as court blocks Uribe run

Colombia's presidential race is wide open after a Constitutional Court ruling that blocks a referendum on whether Alvaro Uribe should be allowed to seek a third consecutive term.
The hugely popular Uribe, one of the strongest U.S. allies in South America, had not said he wanted to run again, and he went on national television to say he would respect Friday's ruling.

"I heed and respect the decision of the honorable Constitutional Court," Uribe said. "I have one wish: The wish to be able to serve Colombia from whatever trench, under whatever circumstance, until the last day of my life."

In a 7-2 decision that is not subject to appeal, the high court ruled that a law passed by Congress to set up the referendum was unconstitutional.

Now the jockeying will begin for the May 30 presidential election to succeed Uribe when his term ends Aug. 7.

There are many viable candidates, including Juan Manuel Santos, Uribe's defense minister during the spectacular July 2008 rescue of rebel hostages Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S military contractors. There is also Uribe's main leftist nemesis, Sen. Gustavo Petro.

What Colombia lacks is a front-runner because Uribe has, even when there were doubts the Constitutional Court would endorse the re-election referendum, continued to be the single most dominating force in Colombian politics.

The conservative president is highly popular for seriously weakening leftist rebels, although he has also been criticized by human rights activists for allying with politicians who collaborated closely with far-right death squads.

First elected in 2002, the 57-year-old Uribe won re-election four years later after allies in Congress pushed through a law amending the constitution so he could run again.

He had been coy about whether he wanted a third term - expressing concern only that his "democratic security" policy that has seriously cut kidnapping and murder rates be continued by whomever wins the May election.

"The only sentiment I harbor is a sentiment of love for Colombia," Uribe said in his TV address after the court ruled. "I wish that in the years of life that remain for me I can feel more love for Colombia."

In announcing the decision after seven hours of deliberations, the Constitutional Court's president, Mauricio Gonzalez, said justices found a number of irregularities in the passage of the referendum law. He said that taken together, the anomalies amounted to "a grave violation of democratic principles like transparency and voter rights."

The court objected to, among other things, the fact that the money spent to obtain the signatures required for the referendum law exceeded the legal maximum
